Our current fire pit lid is a wooden lattice, which does the job, but isn't super flat and has far too many holes. We wanted a flat surface without holes, kind of like a real table.
I didn't take any pictures during the process, so I have opted for stick-figure drawings to bring the story to life.
I selected the wood from the scrap pile, the previous owners of my parents' place left a lot of wood behind.
To measure a circle, I used a nail and a piece of string. Then using the jigsaw, I cut the pieces to size. Always wear hearing protection when using power tools.
I nailed some boards to the underside of the lid to keep it together, then I sanded the edges to make it nice to hold.

Here it is in position on the firepit. I'm pretty happy with it, the scrap wood is charming.
